Alton Towers – Attractions

Alton Towers is world renowned for its innovative and often unique worlds first or record breaking attractions, such as Oblivion, The Smiler and most importantly Europe’s first inverted roller coaster – Nemesis. Below is a list of the parks must do attractions and roller coasters for all ages.

Nemesis

Nemesis opened in 1994 and was a part of a huge rollercoaster boom for the country, with Blackpool Pleasure Beach also opening “The Big One” and near by Drayton Manor opening Europe’s first stand up roller coaster “Shockwave” – As with many of the parks attractions the ride was designed by John Wardley and wraps its self around a huge pit that was dug out for the ride. Nemesis is often regarded as one of the worlds best inverted rollercoasters and continues to thrill riders to this day.

Galactica

Galactica, originally known as Air is the world’s first flying roller coaster, as well as in recent years being regarded as the world’s first rollercoaster fully dedicated to VR. The ride began life as Air, a calm relaxing theme allowing riders to float round the lower part of Forbidden Valley in a sensational experience which really does feel like you’re flying! In recent times the ride has been changed to an experience themed around space – riders can still fly like they did on Air, however now there is also the option of virtual reality headsets featuring a fast paced adventure through space. As a part of this several new theming elements were added including a giant portal which provides a perfect photo opportunity during the later months.

Wickerman

Wickerman opened for the 2018 season – making it the first wooden roller coaster to be built in the UK since CCI’s Megafobia, located at Oakwood Theme Park in Wales. Wickerman features an immersive story line which begins the minute you enter the queue line, with gradually changing audio and various details through. The signature element of the ride of course is the huge Wicker structure located at the centre of the ride. This structure sets its self alight as riders pass through, creating a spectacular atmosphere and thrill for all.

Oblivion

Oblivion is the world’s first vertical drop rollercoaster – located in the X Sector area of the park the ride features a spectacular drop which dominates the area, proving very intimidating to riders and spectators alike as the ride booms through the specially dug out underground tunnel before coming into the brakes. The ride may be short but certainly provides a thrill to many today still.

The Smiler

The Smiler is the world’s first 14 inversion roller coaster, and is certainly sure to provide a thrill for even the most seasoned thrill seekers. Originally teased during the 2012 season with the park’s iconic scare attraction “The Sanctuary” The Smiler is themed around the Ministry of Joy, which is committed to making you smile, with a mixture of air time and the truly exhilarating Sea Serpent roll, The Smiler certainly never fails to make riders smile!

Th13teen

Th13teen (pronounced Thirteen) opened during the 2010 as a replacement of the iconic Corkscrew roller coaster, located in what is now the Dark Forest area of the park. This unique family coaster sends you into the depths of the woodland behind the ride it’s self before a trip into the crypt but what will happen inside? There’s only 1 way to find out!

Rita

Formerly known as Rita: Queen Of Speed, Rita is the park’s launch coaster which offers a short but snappy experience for those who wish to reach 60mph in a matter of seconds, the ride is the 2nd fastest roller coaster in the park, with Oblivion taking top spot.

Runaway Mine Train

For a more relaxed experience, why not head to the Runaway Mine Train? located located in Katanga Canyon, Runaway Mine Train is a firm family favourite, interacting with the surrounding area including the near by Congo River Rapids. Choo Choo!

Spinball Whizzer

Spinball Whizzer is an exciting family coaster offering a unique ride every time! Your ride car spin depends on the way weight is distributed in the car. The ride is located directly on the park entrance and proves a popular choice amongst families and thrill seekers alike and with a 1.2m height restriction vs the 1.4m of some of the park’s larger coasters it’s clear to see why the ride remains a favourite among families.
